Project Description
We are seeking undergraduate research fellows to join our Elementary Computing for All project for summer 2023. Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduate program. Our research project, led by Mark Warschauer, UCI Professor of Education and Informatics, is investigating the implementation of a computer science and AI curriculum to meet the needs of English language learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse elementary and middle school students. We are working in partnership with Santa Ana Unified School District, Fullerton School District, Montebello Unified School District, El Sol Science & Arts Academy, and the Delhi Center of Santa Ana. We are seeking research assistants that are capable and interested in working with children, conducting research, analyzing data, and disseminating findings.
Fellows will work 7-8 weeks at 15-20 per hours of week from mid-June through August and receive a stipend of $2000.

Skills/Experience Needed
Due to the National Science Foundation requirements, applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.
A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required as is attention to detail and reliability. Prior coursework in Education Sciences, Psychological Science, Informatics, Computer Science, or Engineering is desired.
Desired strengths include strong interest in promoting diverse children’s learning, interests in teaching coding and/or AI literacy , good written and spoken English, interest or experience in educational research, and attention to detail. Access to a car, fluency in Spanish, and prior experience working with children may be helpful but are not required. All training for duties outlined above will be provided.

- Helping plan and teach coding and AI literacy to children aged 6-13 in a Santa Ana summer camp.
- Help plan and assist with a professional development for Grade K-2 teachers on teaching coding with Scratch Jr. and analyze data related to K-2 student use of Scratch Jr. in the classroom.
- Help organize, transcribe, and analyze qualitative data from observations and interviews of upper elementary students learning coding with Scratch and environmental literacy.
